In this powerful message from our 40 Days series, we explore the story of the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35), one of the most intimate and revealing resurrection appearances of Jesus.
Two disciples, heartbroken and disillusioned, walk away from Jerusalem, unaware that the very Savior they mourn is walking beside them. Pastor Jim unpacks how their eyes were opened in the breaking of the bread, drawing deep parallels between this experience and the spiritual journey many of us have taken. From paradigms of worldly power to the transforming realization of a resurrected Messiah, this sermon reminds us that the same Jesus who revealed Himself to them reveals Himself to us today—through Scripture, prayer, Christian fellowship, and the sacraments.
Why didn’t Jesus immediately ascend and send the Holy Spirit? Because first, He had to establish, beyond all doubt, that He is risen. That truth is the foundation upon which the church—and our faith—is built. The disciples' hearts burned within them as Jesus spoke, and their lives were never the same.
